CHEVY TAHOE: THE DOWNSIDE TO CUSTOMER GENERATED MEDIA

The most vocal segment of any group tends to be very small and very pissed off. Sometimes their anger is justified, most of the time it's fire and brimstone coming from a few malcontents who simply like to bitch. Those folks who are OK with the status quo tend to be silent. Which creates a signal to noise ratio vastly in favor of noise.

One of the problems with unrestricted blogs and customer generated media initiatives is that the folks who are pissed can generate a tremendous amount of noise which is then amplified by other media platforms. Chevy is finding this out. They created a contest to let users make their own ad for the Chevy Tahoe, and in doing so enabled some less than flattering characterizations. Click here to view a couple of the ads created by "customers(?)".

So what's the solution to this? Simple. Take the ads down.
